Civic Engagement

Extra meritorious service and involvement with the community and the external civic community occurs and contributions to charitable and nonprofit organizations are made.

  • From December 13th through December 16th, in partnership with the Buffalo Soldiers Motorcycle Club and the Northwest Boys and Girls Club, and our own Kappa League had our Annual Toy Drive. Through our continued partnership with the Northwest Boys and Girls Club, we were able to provide over 150 families with gifts. As families throughout the Hartford Metro Area dealt with inflation, combined with the loss of extended pandemic benefits, this year's Toy Drive served not only as relief for those most in need, but families who for the first time found themselves digging deeper than ever to provide a Merry Christmas to deserving children.

“This year has had its ups and downs but I would truly like to thank the Hartford Nupes for taking one thing off my plate.” ~Tammy Harris-Wilson

Brothers across the Metro within and outside of the chapter were responsible for making this year a true success. Using their personal and professional networks to gather more toys than we have in the past.

  • On December 5, 2021 we had our first Kappa League meeting of the 2021-2022 fraternal year at the new Southwest Boys & Girls Club. This first session was ‘Getting to Know You’. Our session concluded with our Kappa Leaguers getting the opportunity to meet our current Grand Polemarch, Reuben A. Shelton III, Esq., our 30th Grand Polemarch, Samuel C. Hamilton, and many other national leaders within our fraternity.

  • The annual golf tournament takes place the first Saturday in August.  Proceeds from this event fund general programming, allowing us the opportunity to expand our community involvement.

  • On November 20th, we hosted a CT Nupe day at the South End Boys & Girls Club in Hartford, CT in partnership with the Stamford (CT) Alumni Chapter. We had a tremendous turnout with brothers in attendance from all across Connecticut and from as far as New Jersey. We have been strategically focused on building bridges between the Hartford Alumni and Stamford Alumni chapters through more partnerships and this helped to serve that purpose. We have also been focused on breaking down barriers between more senior brothers and newer brothers. During the event, older brothers worked with newer brothers teaching them how to wrap canes, twirl, stroll, chant and also held a workshop on etiquette and protocol. The brothers had an outstanding time enjoying each others company and engaging in fellowship.

  • On November 22nd in partnership with St. Monica’s Episcopal Church, we were able to assist with the distribution of all the components for families to provide a complete meal. Brothers were responsible for bagging and delivering Thanksgiving Bags that went beyond just turkey. More than 120 families were provided with turkeys, sides and desserts in honor of our late Brother Damon Bethel who passionately served in the community, especially during this season.
